This is Me, Raven, on the left.  Cherie is on the right.

Now you know what we look like in the morning.

I came out when I was 35, dreaming and reading stories all the while of loving women.  I was living with a husband and four kids at the time that I finally came out.  He said, "You can go experiment, just as long as you come home to me."  I did come home to him to tell him I wasn't staying.  He gave me "permission" to have my "love affair" if I just stayed.  I couldn't be true to him nor myself if I did that.  I hope, after all these years that he understands.

Cherie at 16 at the Summer Youth Music School in Durham at the University of New Hampshire.  To attend this summer camp she had to be recommended by her High School teacher.  She played saxophone and sang in the chorus.

Cherie's story is similar to mine.  She had two kids and a husband.  He gave her "permission" too.

Raven at 18, 1960

This was taken in front of my future Mother-In-Law's candy store on 135th Street in New York City.  I was 18 and this was probably taken the same year that Cherie was in music camp. I was leaning on a pink "Caddy".  Across the street (the background building) was the YMCA.

I've heard this story of "permission" many times and have told the young woman who is considering coming out:

  1. Find what are you losing and what you are gaining.
  2. Go with your heart.  You won't have many chances in life to do just for you.
  3. Don't hurt anyone, including yourself.  But if you must hurt someone, be true to yourself.  It's kinder that way.

Fortunately, we found each other.
